§ 04 — Laboratory

Why do almost a third
of amounts begin with the digit 1?

In natural financial data the first digit is not random: the digit 1 appears in about 30% of cases, the digit 9 in fewer than 5%. This is Benford's law. Fabricated amounts usually do not obey it — and that shows.

Prof. Glogić published the application of Benford's law in forensic analysis in the Journal of Forensic Accounting Profession (2021). Try the test on your own data.

Open Benford Lab
Example: 600 fabricated amounts. An excess of fours and nines — the typical signature of amounts just below an approval limit.
